Every February, the Black Caucus of National Council of Teachers of English sponsors the
African American Read-in in which schools, libraries, businesses and other community organizations come together to read the works of African American writers. This year was the library’s fourth of participation, and the turnout was the best ever! Sixty-three people came to the Central Library Monday, to hear fifty readers, including twenty from the Governor’s School, between the hours of 10:00 and 5:30.

Thanks so much to everyone who worked so hard to make this event a success!

Unfortunately, the Progress doesn’t have their article on their website, but please, stop by the library to read up on it.
The Progress included a picture but you can also see the picture here and take a virtual tour here.

So, the new year is upon us, and so we’re taking a look at the old one.  How did we measure up?

The Petersburg Public Library issued 1565 new adult library cards and 829 children’s cards, for a total of 2374.

We checked out 86,604 books and 33212 DVDs, as well as 54935 c0mputer sessions!  For a grand total of 184,751.  Think we can break 200,000 this year?

We would like your help.

We here at the library are very concerned about our city’s children, and we know you are as well.  So we are asking for your input.

What can we do to help your children?  What would bring them (and you!) into the library?  What would you like to see from us?  We really value your input on this, so thanks in advance for your opinion!

Welcome to the Petersburg Public Library’s latest presence on the ‘net!

To start us off, we would like to share with you the latest news on the biggest happening with the library right now, the construction of the new library. You may know that the city has already purchased the site for the new building, the old Petersburg/Crossroad Ford location at Washington and Market. (The owner of Crossroads Ford gave the city a great deal on the property. Go see them at their new location on Temple Ave. between Colonial Heights and Hopewell!) Demolition at the site will begin around the new year and new construction should begin in the spring. In the meantime, the library foundation, director and staff are hard at work with the architects (Gil Entsminger’s firm in Old Towne) to create a new and greatly updated library.

The new building will have plenty of meeting space, including a 300 seat auditorium for public use. Of course, the library will be using it as well; we are grateful to the many venues in the city that have hosted us over the years, but we are really looking forward to having our own space. And yes, of course, we will have more computers, as well as other technology.

More details as they become available, and check back often for other library developments, including latest arrivals, reviews and more!
