Sweety Pies
Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations with Pie (by Patty Piner, 641.865 P656)
Very sweet, with just a bit of spice, this is a collection of unique pie recipes, each one with an entry about the pie’s origin. The common thread in the stories is power; these women have used these pies, or seen them used by others, to win friends and influence people. Sister Bernice used her grits pie to win the church’s most eligible bachelor (or maybe it was the foot washing?). Miss Viola used her cooking to get her husband’s attention and sympathy during a difficult time. Dezarae Triplett’s cooking provided her sole advantage against a domineering mother-in-law. Time and again, these tales demonstrate that the way to a man’s heart is indeed through his stomach.
This is a fun collection and the photos will have your mouth watering. If you are a cook, you’ll be grabbing for your rolling pin and wanting to get started, but if not, the stories alone are worth your time.
